“Dining at Delmonico’s” is a colorful look at the history and recipes of Delmonico’s, America’s first Restaurant.
Delmonico’s history is one of “firsts”: the first American restaurant to use tablecloths, to offer private dining rooms, to furnish a separate wine list, to admit women diners, and to re-envision haute cuisine for the American palate.
Delmonico’s was where American diners were introduced to some of our most beloved dishes:
Lobster A la Newburg
Eggs Benedict
Manhattan Clam Chowder
Baked Alaska
Oysters Rockefeller
Many were created in Delmonico`s kitchen by New York`s first star chef, Charles Ranhofer; others were popularized here. And always heading the bill of fare was the Delmonico`s Steak, an unbelievably succulent 20-ounce prime rib-eye, grilled to perfection and topped with herbed butter, which remains the gold standard that other steakhouses try to emulate.

From The Original Delmonico’s Restaurant, Delmonico’s Original Steak Sauce is slightly sweet with a hint of exotic tamarind and a vinegary-spiciness that offers the perfect marriage to the classic Delmonico steak (as well as other styles of beef, pork, and lamb).
Although started in 1837 as a French restaurant, Delmonico’s has evolved into a contemporary steak house which created the need for a line of sauces that would complement meat, poultry, and seafood.
Delmonico’s is America’s first fine dining restaurant located at 56 Beaver Street in the heart of Manhattan’s financial.

What do Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and Harry K. Thaw have in common?
In one word – Delmonico’s!
Though the years, New York’s elite dined at Delmonico’s.
The famous Charles Dickens often enjoyed dinner at Delmonico’s. Mark Twain celebrated his 70th birthday celebration in Delmonico’s private dining room (photo above).
And, Harry K. Thaw, the wealthy man-about town and accused murderer of the famed architect Stanford White, was a big fan of Delmonico’s. The one catch?
