America’s Five Best Restaurants Older Than 100 – EsquireJohn Mariani of Esquire says it best in Esquire on June 14th, “The first full-fledged restaurant in the U.S. was founded by a Swiss sea captain named Giovanni Delmonico in 1837 down in the then-burgeoning Wall Street district, with individual, well-set tables, French wines, an à la carte menu, and a lady cashier. Every important personage and famous visitor, including Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray, dined at “Del’s,” and Samuel F.B. Morse sent the first transatlantic cable from a dining room. Over two centuries, Delmonico’s moved uptown (and closed during Prohibition), but the Beaver Street restaurant, with its marble portals from Pompeii, is still going strong. Lobster Newburg Day – March 25thDelmonico’s celebrates Lobster Newburg Day, March 25th In celebration of one of the culinary classics that originated at Delmonico’s, we are serving Lobster Newburg all day on March 25th for $18.76. The Dining at Delmonico’s Cookbook tells it best, “Another Delmonico’s fairy tale begins with a man named Ben Wenber, a sea captain who sailed between Cuba and New York trading fruit. … At some point along about 1876, Wenberg announced that in his travels, he had discovered a new way to cook lobster. He asked Charles Delmonico to bring a chafing dish and a lobster right to his table, where he proceeded to prepare the custacean with crea, cognac, sherry, sweet butter, and cayenne pepper. … Chef Ranhofer (Chef of Delmonico’s) added his own refinements, and the dish was named…”
